Apple today announced that Steve Jobs will indeed host the keynote for the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) next Monday in San Francisco. Aside from the expected focus on iOS 5 and Mac OS X Lion, Apple’s announcement also confirms that Jobs will introduce the company’s “iCloud” service.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs and a team of Apple executives will kick off the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) with a keynote address on Monday, June 6 at 10:00 a.m. At the keynote, Apple will unveil its next generation software – Lion, the eighth major release of Mac OS X; iOS 5, the next version of Apples advanced mobile operating system which powers the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch; and iCloud, Apple’s upcoming cloud services offering.
Apple last month was reported to have purchased the iCloud.com domain name, with additional reports claiming that Apple has indeed been referring to its streaming service by that name. Apple has been said to be close to wrapping up negotiations with major music labels and publishers to allow users to stream their owned music from Apple’s cloud-based servers to any of a number of Internet-connected devices.

In most respects, the Droid X (shown above on the left), and the Droid X2 are identical. Their size, weight, RAM and onboard memory, camera, and launch price are exactly the same. However, the Droid X2 has received a moderate improvement in certain important areas.
It has gone from the single-core 1GHz TI OMAP processor of its predecessor to a dual-core, the screen has gone from a (854 x 480) WVGA resolution to (960 x 540) qHD, the OS has gone from Android 2.1 to 2.2 with the promise of an update to 2.3 as soon as it’s available.
That’s really the extent of the difference between last year’s model and this year’s. The main factor that could potentially inhibit the Droid X2 is that it’s not LTE compatible, and Samsung’s Droid Charge has taken the role of highest-end Droid smartphone with a slightly slower processor than the Droid X2, but with a significantly faster LTE connection.
The Droid X2 goes up for sale on May 19 in Verizon Wireless’ web store, and will come to physical retail on May 26. It retains the $199.99 (after rebate and two-year contract) pricetag of the Droid X. It also continues to have the optional mobile hotspot tethering capability which adds $20 per month to the voice and data plans, and has a 2GB bandwidth cap.

Apple Store employees will have to give up their phones Saturday and have them locked away in the stores’ offices for 24 hours; word is that Apple is planning something major to be announced, shared and/or sold on Sunday tied to the 10th anniversary of the opening of its first retail stores.
Just what that something is isn’t known, but Boy Genius Report says it will be black-curtain time on all the windows at Apple’s stores Saturday night, the curtains a traditional Apple tease to the unveiling of a new product.
What’s more, BGR says based on “information from a solid Apple source,” between 10 to 15 employees at each store will be working an overnight shift Saturday through mid-Sunday, and that “Apple stores have apparently already received hardware to install, and are expecting more hardware to come on Friday or Saturday. All materials that Apple stores have received have been instructed to be under lock and key until after close on Saturday night.” Also:
Employees have had to download gigabytes of data from Apple corporate labeled, “training” in a password-protected zipped folder that won’t accessible to managers or anyone else until Saturday afternoon.
Lastly, all Apple retail stores have mandatory meetings on Sunday, May 22nd. Most meeting are scheduled for the morning, but there are evening meetings as well.
While no one knows for sure what’s up, AppleInsider suggests “one potential product could be the rumored iCloud service that is expected to play a major role in future versions of iOS and Mac OS, and also offer streaming music and media capabilities. In April, Reuters reported that Apple’s work on its new streaming music service was ‘completed,’ while a separate report claimed that Apple has inked deals with two major record labels.”
Daniel Ionescu, at PCWorld, says the big event could mean Apple is “ready to launch ‘long-rumored’ products such as a TV set, or a free MobileMe service.” Or, he wrote, perhaps Apple is “just redecorating.”
The actual 10th anniversary of Apple’s stores is May 19. On that day in 2001, the first two stores opened in Tysons Corner mall in Virginia and in Glendale, Calif., at the Glendale Galleria. The company now has more than 300 stores worldwide; more than 200 of them are in the U.S.

This is a review I did for our Adventure Blog. This is the Gram Weenie Pro alcohol stove by End2End Trail Supply. This is a little excerpt from their site.

The newest generation of Gram Weenie PRO is here! The all new Gram Weenie PRO features a rolled crimp construction, eliminating the rivets that used to hold it together. This has created smooth lines and a dependable, seam free seal that won’t fail.

The Gram Weenie PRO is the bigger brother to the original Gram Weenie stove. Taking inspiration from all the larger bottle stoves on the market, the PRO fills the nitch between the original Gram Weenie and the Thru Hiker stove. The PRO sports a 1 ounce fuel capacity for approxiamately 11 minute burn times. The PRO was designed for solo hikers who need to boil 16 ounces (2 cups) of water, while maintaining a compact, lightweight kitchen.
Specifications:
Stove Weight: 0.7oz (19 g)
Height: 1.75 in (3.8 cm)
Diameter: 1.75 in (4.4 cm)
Fuel Capacity: 1 oz
Burn Time: approximately 11 minutes/1 ounce fuel
Primer Pan Weight: 0.1oz (2 g)
Designed to boil up to 16 ounces of water

Here is my video review:

So Spring has finally arrived! I want to start by saying I was envious of my fellow backpacking crew as they made their way out for the first trip of the year this past weekend. I had been on one other trip, but a monsoon buried us in water for the entire trip. Needless to say, I was left wanting more. The guys all packed up and descended into the valley Friday evening. I was stuck working the weekend! Not happy about it. The guys did have an excellent adventure and beautiful weather. You can check our their trip report here –> (http://www.adventureblog.us).

I will be traveling north this weekend to Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky. We plan on camping at the campground and doing some caving. I will post some updates when I return.

I had a thought today, I am in need of an intervention. I have too many blogs, too many interests, and not enough time. I have been writing for my own tech blog for three years now. I enjoy writing blog entries about technical issues. I work in the IT field and enjoy computers, networking, and mobile technology. On the other hand, I love leaving the office and enjoying the great outdoors. I have been hiking, backpacking, and camping for over 20 years. I have decided to compile all my interests into one site, and that site is this one. I thought that combining my teching and my trekking would make it easier to keep up. So now you have the possibility of reading about the newest iPhone release and our trip to Snow Falls with a gear review of a new 3 oz. stove in the same day! I have a trip scheduled next weekend to Mammoth Cave National Park. Pics and vids should soon follow.

Oh, sure — Google’s being all-too-kind by handing out a few free megabytes of Verizon data with each of its Cr-48 netbooks, but if you’re both lucky enough to have one and more inclined to use that dust-collecting AT&T SIM of yours, there’s hardly a better day for you to pay attention to a hack. After noticing that a recent update to Chrome OS added GSM support for Qualcomm’s Gobi 3G chip, Hexxeh dug in a little to see what it’d take to get the Cr-48 operational with a data SIM from Ma Bell. Turns out there’s shockingly little needed from you; simply flip the Developer switch beneath the battery and follow the shell commands listed in the source link. It should be noted that there’s no data counter here, so watch those gigabytes if you’re working with a data cap. There, we solved your Saturday. You’re welcome.

HP TippingPoint on Wednesday announced the dates for its Pwn2Own hacking competition — March 9-11 in Vancouver — and that Google has augmented the contest’s $105,000 cash award fund with an additional $20,000 for anyone who can compromise the Chrome browser.

Other Web browsers available to potential hackers at the contest will include the latest release candidates of Apple’s Safari, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, and Mozilla’s Firefox, running on 64-bit systems under either Windows 7 or Mac OS X Snow Leopard.
The laptops used will be either a Sony Vaio, an Alienware m11x, or an Apple MacBook Air 13″. For a successful hack of Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Safari, the hacker will win the laptop used and a $15,000 cash prize, along with some other benefits.
If Chrome is hacked — and this requires escaping the Chrome sandbox using vulnerabilities only in Google-written code — the competitor will win $20,000 and a Google CR-49 Chrome OS netbook. Perhaps because of the unfinished state of Chrome OS, competitors will not have the option of trying to break into Chrome on a Chrome OS netbook.

Mobile devices will be the other major target. Competitors will have the option of trying to hack into a Dell Venue Pro running Windows 7, an iPhone 4 running iOS, a Blackberry Torch 9800 running Blackberry 6 OS, or Nexus S running Android.
In addition, competitors this year will be able to attack cell phone baseband processors, which send and receive signals from cell towers. This has been an area of active security research, in part due to the availability of software called OpenBTS, which allows users to set up their own cell tower with some relatively inexpensive computer equipment.
As with the browser attacks, Pwn2Own competitors who execute a successful mobile device attack win the device itself and $15,000. Those who think they have the right stuff can register for the contest until February 15.
Awards of this sort appear to be helpful in promoting the controlled release of vulnerabilities. Three months ago, Google expanded its bug bounty program through which it pays $500 to $3,133.70 for previously undiscovered software flaws. Launched in January 2010 to reward those reporting Chrome bugs, the program was expanded to cover the company’s Web sites in November.
Google paid out about $14,000 in bounties in January.

It’s here. After almost four years of speculation, the iPhone will finally come to Verizon’s network on Feb. 10.

And to answer everyone’s question, the Verizon iPhone is nearly the same as AT&T’s iPhone 4 — but it doesn’t drop calls. For several million Americans, that makes it the holy grail.

I took the Verizon iPhone to five cities, including the two Bermuda Triangles of AT&T reception: San Francisco and New York. Holding AT&T and Verizon iPhones side by side in the passenger seat of a car, I dialed 777-FILM simultaneously, and then rode around until a call dropped. (Why that number? Because I wanted to call a landline, eliminating the other person’s cell reception from the equation. Also, Mr. Moviefone can carry the entire conversation by himself, so I could concentrate on the testing.)

In San Francisco, the AT&T phone dropped the call four times in 30 minutes of driving; the Verizon phone never did. The Verizon iPhone also held its line in several Manhattan intersections where the AT&T call died. At a Kennedy airport gate, the AT&T phone couldn’t even find a signal; the Verizon dialed with a smug yawn.

Most impressively, the Verizon iPhone effortlessly made calls in the Cellphone Signal Torture Chamber of Doom: my house.

The Verizon iPhone did drop one call — in baggage claim at the Los Angeles airport. And, of course, there are regions where AT&T coverage is better than Verizon’s. But in general, my testing matches the conclusions of Consumer Reports and RootMetrics.com: the Verizon iPhone has more bars in more places. (Hey, that might make a good slogan! Oh, wait…)

In general, the Verizon and AT&T iPhones are identical. Same sleek, thin, satisfying, plastic-free body — all glass and metal. Same gorgeous, high-resolution screen — 960 by 640 pixels. Same battery life — you’ll need a recharge every night. Same camera on the back, which can take 5-megapixel stills or excellent hi-def video — the flash doubles as a video light. Same low-resolution camera on the front, suitable for Wi-Fi videochats, using Apple’s FaceTime software for iPhone or Mac.

Even the prices are about the same. The 16-gigabyte phone costs $200 with two-year contract. The monthly service costs, for example, $70 for unlimited voice calls, plus $20 for 5,000 text messages, plus $30 a month for unlimited Internet use. (Verizon says that it will soon eliminate that unlimited plan, just as AT&T recently did. Instead, you’ll pay something like $25 a month for 2 gigabytes of Internet data. Good luck figuring out how much that is.)

The single new feature in Verizon’s iPhone is Personal Hotspot, where the iPhone becomes a Wi-Fi base station. Up to five laptops, iPod Touches or other gadgets can get online, using the phone as a glorified Internet antenna.

That’s incredibly convenient. Many other app phones have it — AT&T’s iPhone gets it on Feb. 13 — but Apple’s execution is especially nice. For example, the hot spot shuts itself off 90 seconds after the last laptop disconnects. That’s hugely important, because these personal hot spot features are merciless battery drains.

The hot spot feature costs $20 a month extra, and buys only 2 gigabytes of data for all of those laptops. Think e-mail, not YouTube. (AT&T will charge $45 a month for 4 gigabytes of data.)

Now, there are two kinds of cellphone networks in this country. They’re known as C.D.M.A. (Verizon and Sprint use this technology) and G.S.M. (the system for AT&T and T-Mobile). Making an iPhone that works on a C.D.M.A. network entailed four adjustments, some of which you won’t like.

First, Apple moved the volume and Ringer Off switches a fraction of an inch to accommodate the C.D.M.A. antenna inside. It’s not a big deal, but those buttons no longer fit existing AT&T iPhone cases. (Contrary to blogger belief, the redesign doesn’t help with the famous Death Grip issue, in which holding the phone in a certain way makes your signal bars drop. Then again, the problem emerges only when you’re in a very weak signal area, so you’ll see it less often on Verizon. I couldn’t reproduce it at all.)

A second C.D.M.A. difference: When you exchange long text messages with non-Verizon phones, they get split up into 160-character chunks. G.S.M. phones are smart enough to reconstitute those chunks into one more readable, consolidated message.

Third: You can’t talk on an C.D.M.A. phone while you’re online. That is, if you’re on a call, you can’t simultaneously check a Web site or send e-mail over the cellular network — and, annoyingly, the Personal Hotspot feature cuts off. (It reconnects when you hang up.)

If the top of your screen says “3G,” an indication that you’re in a high-speed Internet area of Verizon’s network, incoming calls take priority and interrupt your online connection. If you’re online in an older, 2G area, you stay online and the call goes directly to voice mail.

It’s not such a big deal. Continuing processes like downloads, Personal Hotspot and GPS navigation resume automatically when you end your call. You can still send text and get messages when you’re on a call. And none of this applies when you’re in a Wi-Fi hot spot; in that case, you can call and surf simultaneously, no problem.

For business travelers, the fourth C.D.M.A. difference is the most disappointing: not many other countries use C.D.M.A. The Verizon iPhone works in about 40 countries, including Mexico, Canada and China; AT&T phones, on the other hand, work in 220 countries. (In both cases, you pay through the nose if you use them overseas.)

Still interested? Here are a few final points to ponder before you plunge.

Even if Verizon’s network is the best in America, its policies and prices are still among the worst. This is the company, after all, that admitted to billing $2 every time you accidentally hit the up-arrow button. (Verizon refunded $52 million and paid the Federal Communications Commission a record $25 million fine.) This is the company that just eliminated its “new phone every two years” discount policy, that just cut its new-phone return policy to 14 days from 30, that doubled its early-termination fee (to $350 if you cancel your two-year contract before it’s up).

Consider, too, that if surveys are any indication, Verizon can expect an enormous stampede of new iPhone customers. Last time this happened — to AT&T — the weight of all those bandwidth-sucking iPhones swamped the network, causing interruptions that persist to this day. The same thing might happen to Verizon.

Verizon swears that it’s prepared for the onslaught. Then again, that’s what AT&T said, too.

Remember, too, that so far, Apple has released a new iPhone model every July. Apple won’t say if there will be an iPhone 5 for Verizon this summer. (“Let’s put it this way: We’re not stupid,” is all an Apple rep would say.) But if it does, and you buy an iPhone 4 now, you’ll be stuck with an outdated phone in only five months.

Finally, a lot has changed in the years it’s taken the iPhone to come to Verizon. Phones that run Google’s Android software have eaten a lot of the iPhone’s lunch. A huge part of that, of course, was the AT&T factor; people bought Android phones so they could be on Verizon’s network.

Even now, though, Android phones are superior in some ways. For example, they offer amazingly good spoken GPS navigation, you can dictate text into any text box, and you can get one with a bigger screen. Of course, the iPhone still wins on battery life, simplicity and both the quality and quantity of the app store. (Google doesn’t screen or supervise what’s on the Android store, as Apple does. Some call that a blessing, others a curse.)

Yes, that’s a lot of footnotes and “yes, buts.” Even so, most people don’t care about overseas compatibility or simultaneous calling and surfing or Verizon’s tactics. They want an iPhone — an iconic, beautiful, fast, elegant iPhone — that doesn’t drop calls.

Now, after years of pining, they have it at last.
